• Use of Courts
    Posted Tuesday, June 10, 2003 [11:07]

The Club Booklet is always the Bible on such matters but a little clarification may help in relation to the demands we have on our Courts as the Summer begins to bite!

The Committee have always regarded certain things as sacrosanct - Monday and Wednesday CLub (Mix-in) evenings; Friday for Juniors; then some elements of Bookable courts and finally evening match play.
As regards the latter, we have responded to the expressed needs of members both in terms of having THREE Mens and THREE Mixed teams in the Dover and District League as our involvement with East Kent League has tailed off at Mens level in particular. This has meant this year that we have two matches on MOST Tuesdays and Thursdays and one will be on astro (Courts 1 and 2) and one will be on grass. If the grass-scheduled match is unable to be played there because of the weather then it HAS to be postponed - it cannot be moved to astro.

We have also safeguarded TWO bookable courts on those evenings when DDL matches are played (Tuesday and Thursday) but it has to be acknowledged that what was hitherto Match Practice night (Thursday) cannot be what it was in the past (all courts). In fact, its general popularity had waned anyway as many team players were playing DDL fixtures on Thursdays (home or away) and there has been a less overt sense of organisation in recent times.

At the same time there is nothing to stop team players booking onr or both bookable courts and in fact there is merit in this if a captain wants to get some pre-weekend practice for his or her four.

I hope this clarifies what is a very complex but necessary arrangement and that it is seen to be fair to all.

  • Grass Courts
    Posted Friday, May 16, 2003 [11:51]

It's summer folks! Well nearly, and this is the time when we bring our grass courts into play. As you may notice we are making some improvements this year. Tim has been hard at work treating the grass over the winter and we are installing new netting. We are also about to 'lop' the trees in the corner of the field both to increase light and to decrease moisture in the evening. It will also to reduce 'leaf drop'.

The tree lop is due for Wednesday May 21st so the two corner courts will not be available until Saturday 25th May.

However the remaining two grass courts ARE now open for use and very good they look too. Please use them!!!

On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, at least TWO of the grass courts will normally be used for Dover and District League matches.

  • Floodlighting
    Posted Wednesday, February 19, 2003 [15:47]

Concern has been expressed recently about the misalignment of bulbs on two of the lighting columns on Hockey Astro 2 resulting in light shining directly into the eyes of tennis players playing under lights on Courts 1 and 2. Remedial action is now being actioned by Mike Nee.

At the same time, we have just received a contractor's report on the state of the tennis lights. It had been thought that an upgrade of lights may be cost effective in the long run but, having taken 'lux' tests, we are assured by Floodlighting Ltd (our choice and the firm who have just installed lights on Pfizer Tennis Courts) that the lights do meet club standards and it would only be in the event of us wanting to stage regional or Challenger matches that we might consider the addition of one extra light per box to those present.
