Canterbury Ladies 3As V Old Williamsonians

For the opening game of the season the Ladies 3As travelled to Medway to play recently relegated Old Williamsonians.Canterbury knew this was going to be a tough introduction to Division 3, having gained promotion last season.

Canterbury absorbed early pressure and the game settled into a well balanced contest, however too many unforced errors in all departments and poor marking allowed Old Willy’s to steal the opening goal.Despite some poor tactical decisions and difficulties juggling a very large squad, Canterbury created enough chances to level the score, but several openings and penalty corners were not converted.

Adopting a more familiar line up for the second half, Canterbury poured forward in force into the opposition’s ‘25’, manufacturing chances time and time again.Unfortunately out of a massive territorial advantage the team repeatedly failed to capitalise on chances and numerous penalty corners.

Old Willy’s rarely troubled the Canterbury defence in the second half but were gifted a second goal when both umpires failed to spot the centre forward’s delicate use of feet before knocking the ball into the net!

Canterbury didn’t allow this set back to dent their efforts, but opportunities continued to be squandered and valuable points were allowed to get away.

This league is going to prove a tough challenge for this team, but on the basis of this weekend’s performance there should be lots of optimism that as the squad gains experience of working together, positive results will be achieved.
