Welcome to the 2nd XI team. We train on a Tuesday night at 7.30pm on the top pitch with the 1st XI team and their coach Jen Wilson. We are currently in the Premier East Women’s Hockey League.

Over the past few seasons we have finished the league in a variety of positions including 3rd, 8th, 6th and 2nd! The team is built up with a mixture of players from experienced ex 1st team ones to younger aspiring ones to all round consistent ones with the occasional wild one (with pink hair) thrown in!

We started the season with an optimistic young side. Players that had been in the squad for a few seasons had to step up their game and share their wise words with the more junior players of the team. This was something that the team took on board very well and players always tried their upmost to make the younger players welcome and ultimately develop their game.

The new team had a tough start to the season playing teams that have been established in the league for a number of years as well as some newcomers who we had to try and fathom out as we played. It did take a while to get ourselves going as a team but for the first time in a while the team did stay fairly consistent. This enabled us to develop as a side and although it took a little longer than normal we did begin to play well as a team and put in some great performances.

One constant that remained was our ability to play well against the tougher sides in the league and on both occasions we held Old Loughts to a draw. This demonstrated what we could do if we put pure grit and determination into our game. This is also showed in the massive number of draws we had in the season. Although the team made the most of points we should have had, particularly against Ipswich, it got to the point that the odd point here and there for a draw was not enough and we could have done with more wins under our belt. Unfortunately this resulted in the team being relegated into Division 1 South

Next season is a new beginning for Canterbury 2ND XI. They have a new captain and vice and are in a league in which they have something to play for. As I step down as the current captain I would like to thank all that have supported me for the last four seasons. I am extremely grateful for the support I have had and wish the new captain and vice all the best for the future seasons.

The season was tough from the start. Unfortunately many of our more consistent senior players were suffering with injuries so at first we barely had enough fit bodies to put a team to put down on paper. Our first few games of the season were hard and we suffered some losses against some well organised teams.

Our first win came at home against West Herts 3-1so things were starting to look up. Our overall team performance was defiantly on the up and training with more of our team with Aaron was paying off. In the first half of the season we managed to secure some points with a little flurry of wins and draws. In the run up towards Christmas we were holding onto the lower middle of the table.

After Christmas we were starting to develop more of a consistent team although we did not always have a full squad to take to some games. We also welcomed back some of our senior players into the team, this made a considerable difference. Our main aim in the second half of the season was to try and stay out of the relegation zone. We were able to continue picking up points with a few more good wins and draws. However, some silly mistakes meant that we could have a few more 3 point games but unfortunately things did not go to plan and we ended up with a draw.

Although the 2’s did not finish as high in the table we did miss the relegation zone and have kept our place in the League. We did demonstrate some good solid performances at times considering the struggle we had with availability throughout the season we should not be disheartened. Many thanks to all that helped this season.
