Welcome!
Canterbury Hockey Club is one of the largest in the country and boasts impressive facilities at the PoloFarm Sports Club complex a few kilometres east of the City. The club fields ten men's sides, five ladies' sides, cup sides, tournament sides, a mixed side, a midweek side and has very strong youth and school sections. And a team all of Lasletts! Each operates in its own organisational structure but collectively form a powerful presence on the hockey sport scene from local, regional, national and international perspectives.
The first teams play at the top level of the national game - the men having become national premier regulars and even League Champions in recent times, the ladies were 2003 EWHA Cup holders and went on to a Silver Medal in the European competition of 2004. These are not "one side" sections - and supporting lower teams participate strongly in leagues at regional and county level, often emerging as champions. The junior section is successful at almost every level and enjoys superb integration with local schools. Via this route there are those that will make the grade right to the top right from the enthusiastic hordes of Sunday morning minihockey!
Few team sports allow passage of players into middle age and beyond - but Canterbury is especially strong at this level. The veteran team (over 40) has the unique distinction of reaching the national finals three years in succession and at last won the EHL Vets Cup in the 2003 competition. Many of these "seniors" provide commendable and essential support for the other teams as coaches, players and officers.
We welcome new players and supporters so please make contact. Match day guests are especially welcome so please visit in person this very family oriented club !
The club is regarded as a centre of excellence and this underlined its choice as a satellite academy for hockey. This reflects not just our current position in hockey nationally, but a confidence in our ability to retain that position by bringing young people into the game and developing them through the vigorous youth section.
The club's facilities include an international standard water base astro and an older sand base one ( a further water base pitch is a scheduled development). Both have superb floodlighting. The club is set within grounds of nearly fifty acres which includes three very fine grass pitches, relief for "easier" games at our very popular Easter Festival - and by those who think they can remember what "real" hockey is all about! It is the chosen venue for major hockey events and has hosted regional and national HA playoffs and Finals as well as the occasional International. PoloFarm will again host the EH National Cup Finals on March 20 2005.
Accompanying the hockey facilities are two superb cricket tables, grass tennis courts and all-weather tennis facilities. There are very ambitious plans for the continuing development of the PoloFarm Sports Club complex including indoor training and playing facilities.
