It was the spinners of all sorts that ensured victory in Canterbury 2nd's KCL fixture against Ashford Town C.C. at Polo Farm on Saturday. Winning the toss it was Ashford who decided to insert the home team who made steady progress through skipper Mark Slaughter (48), Chris Jay (28) and Stu Drakeley (27). Their scores ensured that a total of 183 for 5 was reached on a slow track caused by all the rain that fell during the week.
The Ashford batsmen were put under immediate pressure by the Canterbury opening bowlers with Dale Clarkson and Pat Kelleher bowling the first 13 overs for just 29 runs. It was then the turn of the spinners to step forward and stamp their mark on the game. Stan Sullivan (3 for 34) with his left arm spin, Rob Walker (3 for 36) with his leg spin and Stu Drakeley (3 for 29) with off spin ensuring that Ashford were bowled out 40 runs short of their target.
