50 primary school children took part in Canterbury Cricket Club’s Floodlit Kwik Cricket Festival at Polo Farm on Friday.

Now in its six year, this regular feature of the local sporting calendar is part of the club’s 'Chance to Shine' Programme. The 'Chance to Shine' campaign launched in 2005 is the largest grass roots sporting campaign in UK history backed by the Cricket Foundation with the aim of promoting cricket in state schools. Canterbury Cricket Club is one of a small number of clubs in Kent delivering a programme to six primary schools in 2008.

Briary Primary School won the competition for the 2nd year running. The school from Herne Bay won all of their games defeating the 2005 winners St. Thomas in the deciding game by 20 runs. The other schools taking part were Kingsmead, Parkside and Beauherne. Diocesan & Payne Smith were due to take part but withdrew at the last minute.

WINNERS - BRIARY PROUDLY DISPLAYING THEIR TROPHIES

All those who took part received a medal, a certificate, and got to keep their festival t-shirt. Trophies were presented by Neil Dexter from Kent County Cricket Club and Bob Bowman from Bob Bowman Roofing & Building one of the sponsor’s of the festival. Other supporters from the local business community included the Canterbury Cricket & Hockey Centre, City Awards and Michael Curd & Co Ltd. Nick Hubble of Beauherne Primary School was named player of the tournament and was presented with an autographed cricket bat.

The club will be holding a junior open evening for new and existing junior members at Polo Farm on Tuesday 15th April from 5.30pm onwards. Further details can be obtained from Russell Griffiths on 01227 738065 or by visiting the club website at www.polofarm.org/cricket
